By: Diego L. (Class of 2029, Academy High School)
My name is Diego Lozano, and I am an ambassador for the class of 2029. I am also the lead behind the Google Spaces-powered project, “AO Chat.” I created this project to improve communication among everyone, not only the staff.
One of the main reasons I was inspired to start this project was because I often had trouble reaching out to my peers for information, like details about programs or other important topics. I also found it challenging to get people to test out this space. So, I wanted to create something that made communication easier for everyone. Google Spaces provided the tools we needed to make group projects and collaboration much more manageable.
Moderating this project was quite challenging because the chat is very extensive and offers many tools, which can be overwhelming. Additionally, there are several constraints that limit the ability to manage settings effectively. However, with the help of my counselors, we were able to navigate these challenges and find ways to make room for success.
We first introduced this project to the class during the AO workshop week, and we rolled it out bit by bit. We added most of the AO program into the chat, introduced the project with its guidelines, and asked icebreaker questions throughout the week, like how everyone was feeling that day and what they were looking forward to. This was to make everyone feel included. The only problem was that not many people took advantage of it or even looked into it. But this is going to change because we're planning to include it in the newsletter. This way, we can make room for questions and feedback and help increase communication within the program.
I'm really excited for this project to fully take off too! Not only does it build bridges of communication, but it also creates a space where everyone can work together to give feedback. Plus, it helps others feel more confident to share their ideas and opinions. This could really bring the program closer together and make everyone feel more involved.
Diego was one of Access Opportunity's Student Ambassadors throughout the 2023-24 school year. He worked on many different projects this year, but this blog represents his final work as an ambassador.
